Learning to Love Yourself
“And If I asked you to name all the things that you love,
how long would it take for you to name yourself?” Unknown.
One of the toughest parts of learning to love yourself is understanding the reasons why. We may think to ourselves “Why do I need to acknowledge I need to love myself to begin with?” or “If there are so many great things to love and admire then why does it not come naturally?” Self-love takes practice. It is a skill that we learn to develop and embrace on a daily basis. There will be good days, and not so good days with relapses, and that’s okay. The goal is progress not perfection.
There truly is no perfect way to begin, but here are some
steps to start:
You
are worthy, you are beautiful, you have potential, you have what it takes. It
is okay to have confidence, as a matter of fact, you should! Once you
begin noticing all the reasons that make you great and unique, you will
understand your worth. Then you will begin to believe it and there will be no
holding you back!
2. Prioritize Yourself
What
are your goals? Do not feel selfish for setting your priorities as number one.
Your happiness and self-care are your priority! Be proud of yourself and
acknowledge your accomplishments every step of the way. If there are setbacks,
look at what you learned from the experience. Incorporate changes in your life
if needed.
3. Incorporate Positive-Self Talk
Be
your number one fan! Encourage yourself on everything you do, from getting out
of bed or even getting through a workout. Try writing notes to yourself and
putting them around your bathroom so that you can read them as you brush your
teeth, as a daily reminder of how great you are.
4. Treat Yourself
Whether
it is with a warm bath, a nap, a movie, or a sweet treat, the goal of treating
yourself is positive self-care. Take a break from to realize the amazing things
you are capable of accomplishing.
The
Health Resource Center has wellness programs to help you get started. The Body
Positive is an 8-week series that teaches people how to overcome conflicts with
their bodies so they can lead happier, more productive lives. We also have Koru
Mindfulness where you can learn how to be more mindful, be less stressed, and
have better sleep and less self-judgment. Remember, you are doing this for your
own benefit and happiness.
