Alcohol Poisoning. Can This Happen?

Since summer is just around the corner, we all are excited to celebrate being finished with the semester and our vacation time! Some people choose to celebrate with alcohol and we encourage those who do drink, to celebrate responsibly!
Many young people think that they will never experience alcohol poisoning, but it can happen fast, especially when you are not aware of how many drinks you have consumed. Alcohol poisoning is a scary thing to witness or go through yourself.
First let’s go over what a stand drinks are so we can keep track of how many drinks we’ve had.
          1 Standard drink = 12 oz. of beer or 1.5 oz. of liquor or 5 oz. of wine
When someone drinks alcohol, it gets absorbed into the bloodstream, which creates intoxication. The level of intoxication can be measured by their blood alcohol content, also known as BAC. Tolerance masks the effects of alcohol, someone may feel fine but their BAC level will show their level of intoxication. Also, BAC continues to rise after someone stops drinking.

Factors that affect BAC levels:
·       Gender (men and women metabolize alcohol differently, women tend to have a higher BAC than men.)
·       Rate of consumption
·       Whether someone has an empty or full stomach
·       A full stomach does not decrease BAC, just slows down absorption.


*The only way to sober up is to WAIT! Sleep does not speed up time.*
Fatal alcohol Poisoning: when a person drinks to the point of passing out, they can die if the concentration of alcohol in their bloodstream reaches a toxic level.

Signs of Alcohol Poisoning
•        Uncontrolled vomiting
•        Slow respiration (<8 breaths per minute)
•        Cold, clammy, bluish, or pale skin
•        Unresponsive
If even just one of those signs is present, call 911 immediately.
•        The Californian Good Samaritan Law offers some legal protection for the person who makes the call.
•        Fear of getting in trouble, should not be a reason to not call 911.
•        After calling 911, place individual in recovery position.

So what is responsible drinking?
These are some of the main criteria for responsible drinking: 1) Alcohol does not negatively impact your academic or social life. 2) Being aware of surroundings at all times. 3) Setting limits and sticking to them.

    I want to help people figure out what they have and what helped me to completely eradicate the Herpes virus infection.
    I had unprotected sex and a few days later felt sick thinking I was just hungover. After spending a day at the beach I felt like I had severe sun exhaustion.
