The Truth about HPV
What HPV is and How It’s Spread
Now you may be thinking…what in the world is HPV? Until a
few years ago, I had no idea either. Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a sexually
transmitted infection (STI) that is transmitted through genital skin-to-skin
contact. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), HPV
is the most common STI in the United States and the population most at risk to
get HPV are people in their late teens to mid-twenties.
The Details
Since HPV is a virus, there is no cure. In most cases, a
healthy immune system can help fend off the virus so it can clear the body on
its own. People infected with HPV can transmit it to their partner(s) even if
they don’t have any symptoms.
There are 40 types of HPV that are sexually
transmitted. Symptoms of HPV include genital warts or genital cancers. Warts
don’t cause cancer. They appear flat or raised in the genital area and may
itch, but usually not painful. Treatment includes freezing them off (cryotherapy) or using a specially prescribed cream on the warts. The types that cause cancer will affect mucous
membrane, so areas like the rectum, vagina, vulva, and even the mouth can have lesions.
Men
still can’t be screened for HPV; however, women at age 21 start having Pap
Tests when they do their annual physical exams. This will let them know if abnormal
cells are present. Most abnormal Pap Test results are due to HPV. If the results indicate abnormal cell growth, further
testing can be done to determine if HPV is present. Not everyone who gets HPV will get cancer. There are ways to help your body boost its immune response to prevent the HPV lesions from turning into cancer.
Prevention
To prevent HPV, the best practice is to use barrier
protection such as an internal or external condom during intercourse or dental
dams during oral activity. Another great prevention method is the Gardasil
vaccine. It is a 3-shot series given over a 6-month period that will protect
people against the 9 most common types of HPV. Student Health Services offers
the Gardasil vaccine and you may be able to receive it for free if you qualify
for the Patient Assistance Program. You must be 19 to 26 years old to qualify. If
