Sleeping Better Can Improve Your Life

Most college students have this idea that sleep is not an essential aspect of their lives. However, late night partying, pulling all night study sessions, and drinking caffeinated drinks are what is expected to survive and succeed in the college world. As a result, students do not sleep well even when they try. This is usually because of sleeping way too long or not being able to sleep at all. What students need to know is that the lack of sleep really affects how they function in life. Having that adequate 7-9 hours each night can greatly improve health, test scores, and overall life. Here are three ways to improve sleep health:

1.  No Caffeine before Bed
Caffeine is a well-known stimulant and the number one source college student use to stay awake. Caffeine can last in the body for up to 6 hours. The most well-known caffeine stimulant is coffee. In order to have better night’s sleep, one would have to cut off the coffee sometime in the mid-afternoon. How would a college student survive without it!? Trust me, it is possible. The human body has ways of producing and acquiring natural energy, like by eating food, so cutting oneself off mid-day from caffeine is not the end of the world.

2. Sleep Positions
Back aches or neck pains when you wake up? Heavy snoring? According to Sleep.org, “Poor sleep posture could potentially cause back and neck pain, fatigue, sleep apnea, muscle cramping, impaired circulation, headaches, heartburn, tummy troubles, and even premature wrinkles.” The two best positions are laying on back and on either side. These positions help with acid reflux, pains, sleep apnea, and more.

3. Manage Stress
Stress affects people in a variety of ways and that includes their sleep. Routine stress can keep an individual awake throughout the night causing insomnia. Insomnia is a serious sleep disorder that can negatively affect an individual's life. College students experience insomnia because of all the things in their life they have to juggle: school, work, sports, friends, and family. Even with all these factors, sleep can greatly improve how one feels, so finding a way to manage the stress would be very beneficial.
