Sun Safety: Take Care of Your Skin


On average, Long Beach gets 287 sunny days per year—that’s a lot of possible sun damage! The sun gives off powerful ultra violet (UV) rays that have the potential to damage our skin. UV rays are harmful because they damage the DNA of our cells. Extreme or prolonged periods of sun exposure can lead to wrinkling, premature aging, and even skin cancer.
There are several different ways to protect yourself from harmful UV radiation.


1. Dress Wisely
Choosing an outfit that will protect you from the sun is one easy way for you to minimize the damaging effects of the sun. Tight knit long sleeve shirts, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses are all great ways to help prevent UV rays from reaching your skin. Don’t forget those sneaky areas that need protection: the back of your neck, your ears, and even the top of your feet!
2. Location, Location, Location!
Moving into an area with more shade, or creating some shade of your own (hello, beach umbrella!) is another easy solution to help prevent skin damage. If possible, minimize the amount of time that you spend outside during peak sun time (10am-2pm).
3. Sunscreen
There are two types of sun cream: sunscreen and sunblock. Sunscreen uses chemicals to prevent UVA (aging) rays from reaching your skin. Sunblock uses a physical barrier, usually zinc, to block UVB (burning) rays from reaching your skin. Nowadays, many sunscreens are formulated to be “broad spectrum” meaning that is protects you from a wide range of UV rays. The sun protection factor (SPF) indicates the amount of time someone is protected from a burn. For example, SPF 30 means you can stay in the sun 30 times longer than you normally would before getting a burn. Many people think that sunscreen should be reserved for days at the beach, however, for maximum protection it is important to wear sunscreen on a daily basis. If applying sunscreen daily seems unmanageable, look for easy ways to incorporate it into your daily routine. Many moisturizers and makeup now comes with sunscreen in the formula!
4. Do Some Research
The US EPA has an easy-to-use tool called the UV Index. You can put in any zip code or location and get a detailed report on the amount of UV rays to be expected. From there, they give you recommendations on what precautions you should take to best protect yourself from sun burns and skin damage.
5. Beds Are For Sleeping, Not For Tanning!
Although they don’t come from the sun, the UV rays that are emitted by tanning beds can be just as harmful. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation “people who first use a tanning bed before age 35 increase their risk for melanoma by 75 percent.” So, what are some safe alternatives to tanning beds? If you’re looking to achieve that bronzed glow for a special event, stick to bronzing makeup and self-tanners without DHA in them. Topical bronzers give you a similar effect without all of the dangerous side effects and aging properties.
